Mumbai: Narayana Health SRCC Children's Hospital, has completed 175+ paediatric epilepsy On Track to 200 surgeries through India’s only dedicated programme for drug-resistant epilepsy in children, and the country’s largest such programme. Among patients who have undergone curative epilepsy surgery at the hospital, 87% are seizure-free at a minimum of one year follow-up. The milestone comes against a backdrop of significant unmet need in India. Epilepsy affects an estimated 0.8% of India’s paediatric and adolescent population. A majority of people with epilepsy develop the condition during childhood. Around one-third of children with epilepsy are known to have drug-resistant epilepsy, for whom timely referral to a specialised epilepsy centre becomes critical. India is estimated to have 2–3 million people living with drug-resistant epilepsy, with approximately one million potentially eligible for epilepsy surgery.
